Split Hansel 4
In this series of large-scale encaustic paintings of dogs I am interested in that moment when a domesticated animal, an animal that is, in many ways a human construct, becomes uncontrollable. I wanted to capture those moments when they are purely animal. The most ‘purely’ bred animals especially intrigue me. The weight of centuries of human engineering rests on the ancestry of purebreds that in many cases they cease to resemble any animal that could survive in nature. Traits have been bred into them that are human constructs and for human purposes and enjoyment. And they are the subjects of endless emotional projection by humans. They are our most enduring form of ornamentation. A science has been made out of their pedigree. I am intrigued by those moments where they break out of this role, when they are at their most uncontrollable, energetic, and awkward.
